Iron Man on Lanzarote: all you need to know

Although this year 2020 the event was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the registration is still valid for 2021. No information is yet available for next year's event, but it is expected to be similar to previous versions.

Swimming

Both the start and finish of the first course, which is the swimming course, are located in Playa Grande, in Puerto del Carmen, the main tourist centre of Lanzarote.

This swimming event consists of two laps, which are separated by a short walk of approximately 20 meters, before getting back into the water for the second lap and reaching the finish line.

It is estimated that the time to cover the distance of the two laps is 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Cycling

For this Iron Man event on Lanzarote, a time of 11 hours and 30 minutes is calculated from the moment the starting gun sounds.

The route is a single lap, where the athletes will reach several of the representative points, such as El Golfo, La Geria, the Mirador del Rio or Puerto del Carmen, the last one being the end of the cycling race.

The circuit is usually closed to traffic and the police control all points.

Running, marathon

For the marathon, a time of 17 hours is calculated after the start. A distance of 42.2 kilometers is covered and consists of 3 laps.

The first one runs along the promenade in Puerto del Carmen until the end of Playa Honda and then back to Puerto del Carmen. The two remaining laps go along the promenade in Puerto del Carmen and arrive in Matagorda, with the turn at the starting point.

More information

The Iron Man on Lanzarote is considered one of the toughest triathlons in the world because of the physical demands required for each of the events.

The event started in 1992 and had only 148 participants. Currently more than 2,000 athletes are involved in swimming, cycling and running a distance of approximately 225 km between the three events. Its promoter is Club La Santa.

The average of the editions is 12 to 13 hours to cover the three modalities, which means a huge physical effort. That is why it is called "Iron Man", because it is men and women with an iron physical strength who dare to register and participate in each edition.

The triathlon begins with the swimming event, and you have to get up early to attend the start: more than 2,000 athletes go into the water wearing polyurethane suits to protect themselves from the cold sea water.

Although the start is no longer by mass, it is divided into groups by age to reduce water congestion and provide more space for the athletes to swim.
