10/10/2019 Cycling around Lanzarote What has to be the right position on the bike
Can you imagine what it would be like to pedal on the Moon? I am sure that you have seen advertisements of cars made in landscapes that do not seem like this planet, and science fiction films where the protagonists walk through strange and unique lands. Surely you do not know, that all these places are very close, and that you could wander them with one of our rental bicycles.

I am talking about the landscapes of Lanzarote: volcanoes, lava, natural phenomena, some Martian and in the background the great Atlantic Ocean. Cycling around Lanzarote has become a real adventure for all types of cyclists.

Cycling in an environment where the vineyards emerge from large craters on earth, with favorable weather conditions throughout the year and where you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea in much of the routes, may be more than enough reason to want to get on one of our rental bicycles on Lanzarote.

If you are passionate about cycling, you want to practice it and you want to relax in the sun, Lanzarote is undoubtedly the ideal destination for cycling at any time of the year.

But what is the ideal position to cycle through Lanzarote and not suffer injuries?

Throughout the 21 years that we have been renting bicycles in Lanzarote and organizing excursions on the island, we have been able to see all kinds of injuries caused by the bad position on the bicycle.

“…Potholes, undercuts, stones, cars or even other cyclists ... can cause unwanted accidents…”

Whether you are a professional or a casual user, taking a comfortable position on the bike can often be difficult for any cyclist. A wrong position can not only impair the performance on the bicycle, it can also have an impact on health. For amateur cyclists who have been riding a bicycle for a short time, the position on the bicycle is usually one of the most complicated problems to correct.

When we ride a bicycle, the tendency of the body is usually to tense and stay stiff, something that seriously impairs comfort. To try to solve the position on the bicycle, I will give you 5 points to correct when you get on one of our rental bicycles.

Cycling around Lanzarote What has to be the right position on the bike

1- Shoulders

They must be totally relaxed. The most common mistake is to try to tighten the shoulders and raise them to the height of the head. We will get a terrible neck pain not to say how uncomfortable it is. A lot of tension in this area of the body will also prevent us from turning the neck, something very important to be aware of traffic.

2-Elbows very stretched.

Elbows should be slightly bent. If these go rigid or blocked they will not be doing their function of natural shock absorbers of the body and we will receive all the impacts. On the other hand, aerodynamics will be impaired because we will be very up on the bike.

3-Wrists.

They must go straight with their arms. If we carry them flexed we can make the pressure on the nerves that numb our fingers or because the blood does not circulate well. At the same time, we can brake as the handles are designed to carry straight hands.

4- Back.

Should go straight in relation to the hip and shoulders. Going very curved, taking out "a hump" can hurt us. On the other hand, if you carry Aero bicycles, it is normal for the posture to be lower. If you suffer from back problems it is better to opt for resistance bicycles, with a much more relaxed posture for the back.

5- Knees.

The knee should be aligned with the foot. Proper placement of the feet on the pedals is important to avoid problems in this joint. The angle of the knee putting the foot on the pedal and the connecting rod being in line with the saddle tube should be around 150º, with the average angle recommended to optimize performance and prevent injuries.

In summary, the position on the bicycle must also be given by its adaptation to the cyclist's measurements. A good placement on the bicycle requires that we pay special attention to a series of general parameters, such as the height of the saddle, the distance of the saddle to the handlebars, the placement of the foot on the pedal and the alignment of the legs when pedaling.
